Bylakuppe - Buddhist Golden Temple

Bylakuppe is the location of "Lugsum Samdupling" (established in 1961) and "Dickyi Larsoe" (established in 1969), two adjacent Tibetan refugee settlements, as well as a number of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The area is located in the west of the Mysore district in the Indian state of Karnataka

The main attraction of the town is the Namrodoling Monastery (Golden Temple).There are many Buddhist monasteries and schools which give quality education for buddhist monks.

The settlements were established on land leased by the state government to accommodate some of the Tibetan refugees who came to resettle in India after 1959. Bylakuppe consists of a number of agricultural settlements / small camps close to each other, and has a number of monasteries, nunneries and temples in all the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Most notable among them are the large educational monastic institution Sera, the smaller Tashilunpo monastery (both in the Gelukpa tradition) and Namdroling monastery (in the Nyingma tradition).

Dubare Elephant Camp

Dubare is known for its elephant camp, and is a forest camp on the banks of the river Kaveri in the district of Kodagu, Karnataka. It is an important base for the Karnataka Forest Department's elephants.

There are opportunities for trekking, elephant rides, fishing, and river rafting. these activities are hosted by Jungle Lodges and resorts

The moist deciduous forests of Dubare are home to many wild animals and birds. Sighting of wild Asiatic elephants are regular and so is spotting the sambhar and the spotted deer. tiger, leopard, wild dogs, gaur and bears are also seen in these forests. Crocodiles can be seen in river. The forests are also home to many reptiles non-venomous snakes.

Bhagamandala Temple

Bhagamandala is a pilgrimage place in Kodagu, Karnataka, in India. It is situated on the river Kaveri in its upstream stretches. At this place, the Kaveri is joined by two tributaries, the Kannike and the mythical Sujyoti river. It is considered sacred as a river confluence or triveni sangama.

A short distance from the triveni sangama, there is a famous temple known as Sri Bhagandeshwara temple, where Bhagandeshwara (Ishwara), Subramanya, Mahavishnu and Ganapati idols are installed. This place is also known as Bhagandeshwara Kshetra, from which the name Bhagamandala is derived. The temples in this area are built in Kerala style which is also similar to the temples in Nepal.

During 1785–1790, the area was occupied by Tipu Sultan. He renamed Bhagamandala to Afesalabad. In 1790 King Dodda Vira Rajendra took Bhagamandala back into an independent Kodagu kingdom.

It is a common practice for pilgrims to take a dip in the triveni sangama and perform rituals to their ancestors before proceeding to Talakaveri, the birthplace of Kaveri

Coorg Trip - Abby Falls

Abbey Falls (also spelled Abbi Falls and Abbe Falls), in the Western Ghats in Karnataka, India. It is located 8 km from the town of Madikeri also known as the head quaters of Coorg

The waterfall is located between private coffee plantations with stocky coffee bushes and spice estates with trees entwined with pepper vines. The falls appear suddenly, the water cascading over rocks into calm pools. A hanging bridge constructed just opposite the falls comes in handy for the Tourists. There is a Kali Mata temple on the other side of the bridge and Coffee and Black Pepper trees on the other side.

Coorg Trip - Nature

Kodagu also known by its anglicised former name of Coorg, is an administrative district in Karnataka, India. It occupies an area in the Western Ghats of southwestern Karnataka.

The Kodavas were the earliest agriculturists in Kodagu & have large parts covered with coffee plantations. During this time, South Indian dynasties such as the Kadambas, the Gangas, the Cholas, the Chalukyas, the Rastrakutas, the Hoysalas and the Vijaynagar Rayas ruled over Kodagu.

Kodavas being known in India as "brave warriors" and members of the Indian warrior caste, Kodagu did not have indigenous rulers as the Kodavas failed to evolve political consensus.

Yercaud Trip

Yercaud got its name from the Tamil words, yeri and kaadu, meaning lake and forest respectively. The British discovered it in the early 19th century. There are accounts of coffee plantations being introduced by a British officer in the area in the second decade of the 19th century.

On the way to Yeraud, there are 20 hairpins and it is a tough ride up the hill. We can see beautiful scenery of the mountains coming out of the clouds....

Shevaroy Temple

The highest point in Yercaud Taluk is Shevaroy Temple which is situated at a height of 5326'. Hence, Yercaud hill area is called "Shevaroyan Hills". It is also called "Ooty of the Poor". This is the third highest range in this part with a modern cave temple at its top. The hill top is bald with a real open view of all the hills around.

Killiyur Falls

The water is from the Big Lake that connects to the falls through a stream. A long walk through the enchanting woods takes you to Killiyur Falls.

Kiluyur water falls had a small water fall when we went but during the months of Nov - Dec we can see excess waters of the Yercaud lake and the other reaches of the Shevaroyan Hills and falls deep into the Kiliyur Valley at 300 feet.

Lady Seat

One of the best views that Yercaud promises.You get a panoramic view of the ghats and all the distant vehicles dwindling their way in and out of trees along the winding ghat road.It surely is a breath-taking view. You can have a closer view of the plains below with the help of the telescope mounted at the Lady's Seat.

When we went to Lady seat the clouds was all over and we had a heavy mist formation and the visibility was very less,....

Rose Garden

We happen to visit the Rose garden which is very near to Lady seat, the park is coming up very nicely, we have very little flowers in the parks and going forward if maintained properly - this could become a park similar to Ooty

How to reach Yercaud by train:
Ideal would be to take the Yercaud Express from Chennai. Salem is 335 km from Chennai on the main railway line. Salem Junction is 36 Kms away from Yercaud and 33 kms from Salem Town. All south bound trains passing via Salem do stop over at Salem.

Somnathpur Temple

Somnathpur is a small village on the banks of the river Cauvery that was founded by the commander of the Hoyasala army, Somnath. The village is famous for its splendid and grand Keshava temple that has been built in the Hoyasala style. The temple is enclosed in a walled courtyard that has a gate and a porch. The temple is built on an elevated star shaped platform.

The temple is famous for its elaborate and intricate sculpturing. Here, you can see the interior walls and pillars of the temple.The main hall has exquisitely turned pillars and ceiling panels

The sides of the raised platform are decorated with richly carved friezes, portraying rows of cavalry, elephants and scenes from the epics.

The temple is an example of the grand and glorious temples built by the Hoysala rulers. The names of the sculptors are inscribed on their works, which was a common practice during the reign of the Hoysalas

Early morning in Cheranmahadevi, it was tough shot but for not to take it but to control the folks in my car who just wanted to reach home and never wanted to wait to the see the beauty changing colors,… So said they are missing the moment in their life,…. So friends live for the moment. The Tamiraparani originates from the peak of the Periya Pothigai hills of the Western Ghats above Papanasam in the Ambasamudram taluk. The great river like the Cauvery, but unlike most of the other Indian rivers, is fed by both the monsoons – the south west and the north-eastern and is seen in full spate twice a year if the monsoons do not fail.

The river Manimuthar is a major tributary of the Tamiraparani. It arises from the dense forest a top Senkutheri in Ambasamudram taluk at the height of about 1300 m. from MSL. The tributaries of the Manimuthar are the Keezha Manimuthar (lower or eastern Manimuthar) and the Varattar.

The river runs from its source for a distance of 9 km. and confluences with the Tamiraparani near Kallidaikurichi. In its 9km. course, it makes minor cataracts. The river contributes a lot, as tributary, to enhance the water level of Tamiraparani as it is always in full spate and perennial. In the year 1957, Manimuthar anaicut was built across the river just three km. above its confluence with Tamiraparani.

The many anicuts, dams and reservoirs on the Thamirabarani river, along with those on the Manimuthar River, provide a large proportion of the water for irrigation and power generation for Tirunelveli District.

Mudumalai Trip

The Mudumalai National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary now also declared a Tiger Reserve, lies on the northwestern side of the Nilgiri Hills (Blue Mountains), in Nilgiri District, we reached Mudumalai from the other side of tamilnadu i.e., from Mysore. The park is most conveniently accessible by road from Mysore on NH 212. A little past Bandipur cross the Ari Gouder bridge to a state border check post, passing here one will enter Mudumalai National Park – This was the route which took to reach our location in Mudumalai.

Mudumalai, which means 'first hills’, is one of the first wildlife sanctuaries established in India. The sanctuary is divided into 5 ranges - Masinagudi, Thepakadu, Mudumalai, Kargudi and Nellakota.

Here one can often spot herds of endangered Indian elephants, vulnerable Gaur, and Chital. The sanctuary is a haven for Bengal Tigers and Indian Leopards and other threatened species.

The Western Ghats, Nilgiri which is about 6 ,000 km including all of Mudumalai National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.

I have seen many blogs and websites, most of them talked about Elephants and Tigers but for a change I have tried to capture insects, flowers and some manuals which my lens could capture.

Bamboo brakes are found amidst dry deciduous, moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests and along the fringes of riparian forests and swamps, we did a 3 km treak into the forest and the path was so swamped that our leader Mr Ramani sir had a tough time walking in the forest. There are two species of bamboo found in Mudumalai. Elephants and Gaur eat both species of bamboo.

There is a high diversity of animal life in the sanctuary with about 21 species of amphibians, 34 species of reptiles, 227 species of birds and 55 species of mammal. We had couple of our friends who wanted to take birds and they got to take a few only – everything needs time and luck for spotting birds. But we as people should leave these animals live at peace and PLEASE AVOID PLASTICS AT THE PARKS

Chennai Sangamam 2011

Chennai Sangamam got off to a colourful start with folk artists from different parts of the State showcasing the traditional arts and culture of Tamil Nadu.

The idea is to have different art forms in open parks, beaches and streets which was an inspiration from the Bangaluru Habba celebrations.

The events that mark the festival include traditional and folk music shows folk dances, martial arts, classical music and dance performances, street plays, drama / theater etc

Karagaattam (Maadattam, Mayilaattam, Karadiaattam, Puliyaattam)

This is one of the showpieces of rural art, peculiar to Tamil Nadu. Young women dance several variations to the music of Naiyyandi Melam. The special feature of this art is that the dancer balances a painted pot on her head while performing a variety of specific foot movements in tune with the music and its rhythm. Karagattam is also known as Karaga Chembu and Kumbaattam. It is performed as an entertainment in temple celebrations. Generally as part of Karagattam performance, Mayilaattam, Puliyaattam, Karadiyaattam and Maadattam are performed. The performers costumed as Peacock, Bear, Tiger and Cow dance to the music of Nayyaandi Melam. The Artists mimic the movements of birds and animals and dance to the music. However in certain places these dance forms are performed separately.

When the word Kalari is uttered, images of Kerala comes to our mind. But the truth is Kalari originated in the district of Kanniyaakumari in Tamil Nadu and it is one of the ancient martial art forms of the Tamils. The word Kalari is derived from the Tamil word Kalam, which simply means a training ground. Sword, Knife, Maan Kombu, Kanda Kodali, Mazhu etc are the weapons that are used in Kalari. There are two kinds of Kalari. They are Vadakkan Kalari (Northern method) and Thekkan Kalari (Southern Method). The Kalari practiced in Tamil Nadu is the Southern style and is prevalent in the districts of Kanniyaakumari. The Kalari performers worship the God, Weapons, Guru and the Ground in the beginning of every performance.

Oyilattam

“Oyil” refers to “grace” and “attam” means “dance”. Therefore “Oyilattam” is the dance of graceful gestures. The dancers dress uniformly and the performers wear colorful turban and hold a piece of cloth in their hands.This dance form is generally performed during rituals associated with temples. Off late the dance form has come to be performed on stages too.

Chendai Melam

Chendai Melam is a percussion instrument traditionally performed by some community of Kanniyaakumari district. This instrument is much popular in the state of Kerala A team of men folk performs this. The performers hold the musical instruments in their shoulder and play the drums with sticks. Generally Chendai Melam is performed at religious festivals to invoke the spirit of the deities. Singara Melam is a part of Chendai Melam. Dancing to the tune of Chendai along with some other musical instrument is known as Singara melam.

Thapattam = Paraiattam

Thapattam is a Folk Dance of Tamil Nadu which has been known as Paraiattam in ancient Sangam Literatures. Parai is an instrument which is used for the declaration and the proclamation of Ancient Tamil King’s message and Orders to the Public. During Bhakti cult both the Saivite and Vaishnavite Saints have referred Parai as one of the ritual instruments in the worshipping patterns through penances. Sri Andal, the counter part of Meera in Tamil Nadu mentions this instrums, Parai in so many stanzas of her work Thirupavai. The uniqueness of Thappattam is that both the player and the dancer are same.

The dance happens for long hours, when performed at temples and other functions. It is these legs that make this happen.

Chettiyar Bommai

Usually we see the Chettiyar Bommai during navaratri kollu, but we have them on stage. It was a treat watching them.

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple Elephant - LAKSHMI

Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple was in existence before the French came and settled in Pondicherry i.e. before 1666. It has walls portraying forty different forms of Ganesha. The temple also has a smaller shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, who is Ganesha’s younger brother. There is also a temple elephant, Lakshmi, who give blessing to the devotis.

And Lakshmi hands over the money to her caretaker,.... dont know if we are making Lakshmi do the right thing. Moreover Lakshmi belongs to the Temple and they should be having enough money to feed her. "Gasesha - Help Lakshmi"

Rajini Mania

Rajnikanth starrer Endhiran review is already great in talk. There’s only one word to describe the movie - simply great. The film's story revolves around a scientist's struggle to control his creation, an android robot whose processor was upgraded to give it the ability to comprehend and generate human emotions, from further sociological mishaps. The robot falls in love with a beautiful woman who also happens to be the love interest of the scientist, which creates a conflict between the two.
We start from Chennai by evening and travelled to Pondy to watch the movie. This was the first time we travelled 150KMs to watch a movie - That is Rajini Mania,.....

Sri Sorimuthu Iyanar Temple

Many families worship Sorimuthu Aiyanar as their family deity. Those facing litigations and court problems place their prayers to Sorimuthu Aaiyanar. The place also serves as a health resort as it is in pleasant environment. Those committing a visit to Sabarimala come here and wear the Mala (chain) in this temple. Their number alone counts high. People offer chappals to one deity here named Valai Pagadai, a strange custom followed here.Presiding deity - Sorimuthu Aiyanar

According to the Kundalini Yoga Sastra, the human body and places of divinity are linked with six Chakras each representing a particular part. This temple, Sorimuthu Aiyanar Temple is also connected with some reputed holy places. The Mooladhara (sitting portion) is connected with Thiruvarur Tiruparankundram Sorimuthu Iyanar, Swadishtanam (just above the sitting or Asana position) with Thiruvanaika, Tiruchendur and Achankoil, Vishuddhi (the neck area) with Kalathi, Kundruthoradal and Pandalam, Agna (between the eyebrows) Kasi, Pazhamudirsolai and Sabarimala and Brahmmarandram (the head) with Kailash, Kadirkamam and Kandamalai.

The place has some of the best water storage areas and a very good place to swim.

The temple has its origin with Aiyappan. With a view to do away with the evils of caste systems, Aiyappan came to this place in the form of a human and married the two daughters of Muthupattan belonging to backward community. People also pray to Sorimuthu Aiyanar to get more milk from their cows. People offer bronze bells to Boothathar in the temple. As the temple happens to be the first Aiyappan temple, people committing to Sabarimala begin their undertaking by wearing the Mala from here. A beautiful temple in the Pothigai hill surroundings.

PRICKLY PEAR cactus (Opuntia species known as `Chapathi kalli' in Tamil) is found in abundance near the Sorimuthu Iyanar koil. It is highly nutritious and is endowed with good medicinal properties.

It is of great economic value, and is extensively grown in Mexico, parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean region. "In Mexico, the flattened stems are eaten, and are very popular. Prickly pear cactus also gives a delicious fruit called tunas. The cactus can be dehydrated, pulverized and made into capsules.

It was mostly used in the 16th to 18th centuries for painting churches and convents and the smooth paint gave a shiny, silk-like finish if white of eggs were added to the mixture. This can be used to preparing wet paint which acts as against sun light for protection. The technology is widely used in Mexico. "If only somebody could identify this and make this region economically stong or somebody might be utilizing this already,...."

This is one another place, people spend a lot of time bathing and the water coming from hills has got lot of medicinal values.

Anayirankal Dam

Anayirankal lake and dam are very popular picnic spots. Herds of elephants visit the lake to quench their thirst and allow the visitors to feast upon the sight of them. The scenic beauty of the lake, the surrounding tea gardens and forests has made the place the favourite of resort owners. Several five star quality resorts have sprung up in the hill slopes over looking the lake.

It is a lush green carpet of tea plants. The Anayirankal Dam is surrounded by the Tata Tea Plantations and evergreen forests. It is an ideal picnic spot.

Munnar Trip

In both Malayalam and Tamil, the word ‘Munnar’ means three rivers, as it is merging place of three mountain streams. The Duke of Wellington was the first prominent person to visit Munnar. Munnar was once the summer capital of the British in southern India. Munnar was developed to cultivate tea plants by British although it was first discovered by Scottish planters.

Munnar has an ancient history and prehistoric relics that can be dated back to Stone Age civilization. The written history begins only from 10th century. In the early 19th century, the headman of the villages of Anchanad, Kannan Thevar, held lands to the north of the high ranges, which belonged to the local Rajah of Poojar.

According to record history, the first tea sapling was planted by A.H. Sharp at Parvathi, part of the present Sevenmullay estate, consisted of 50 acres of land in the surrounding jungle.

J D Munro, a British lawyer and tea planter leased close to 600 sq. km of land around Munnar, which was then covered with thick jungle, from the Poonjar chief, a subordinate of the Maharaja of Travancore. He then cleared the jungle for Tea plantations. This land was later known as Kannan Devan (Kannan Thevar) Concession Land.

Later in 1895, Messrs Finlay Muir & Company bought Munro’s land and in 1976 Tata-Finlay Ltd. purchased it. Then in 1983 James Finlay Group sold their remaining share holdings and the company became known as Tata Tea Ltd., the largest integrated tea company in the world.

With the lush greenness of flourishing foliage, rambling with tea plantations enshrouded in cool mist is the picturesque Munnar, which is just approximately 4.5 hours (135 km) drive from the hot and humid coastal seashore of Kochi. The roads leading to Munnar are less cluttered and enjoyable compared to the ones leading to other hill stations.

The Kochi - Munnar route is the easiest way of reaching Munnar for foreign and native tourists, with the nearest Airport, the Nedumbassery Airport and Aluva Railway station, both situated near Kochi. The route extends through Thripunithra, Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam, Adimali and Pallivasal.

Dona Paula, Panjim, Goa

Dona Paula is a tourist destination, in the suburbs of Panaji, Goa, India. Named after Dona Paula de Menezes, the daughter of a viceroy (in Portuguese India), who threw herself off the cliff, when refused permission to marry a local fisherman, Gaspar Dias.

Dona Paula Beach is informally also referred to as Lovers Paradise.

The Dona Paula Beach is also a major tourist attraction due to a myth attached to the place. According to this, Dona Paula is entombed in the Cabo Chapel, the residence of the Governor of Goa and is supposed to be seen emerging from the moonlit waves wearing only a pearl necklace. Several tourists as well as locals guided by this myth visit the beach for a glimpse of Dona Paula.

Goa Carnival 2010

The Goa (which was a Portuguese colony) Carnival festival is held every year in the month of February and lasts for three days. It is one of the eagerly awaited events of the year. Goa’s famous carnival processions and float parades are symbolic of its Portuguese legacy. The carnival is held annually just before Lent, which is a 40-day fasting period preceding Easter. Goa Carnival was introduced by Portuguese, who ruled over the state for more than 500 years.

Every year carnnival starts by 4PM, we reached by 3.30PM and was looking for a nice spot to have a better view and to take some pictures.

Empty streets, sales is yet to kick up for the day. They all come from Mumbai to sell there face masks and toys. They plan to produce these face masks - 3 months in advance.(I did ask with them!)

King Momo of Goa leads Goa Carnival 2010
The festival is led by King Momo, a locally chosen dignitary who is given a key to the city. This time round Mark Dias, a bartender by profession, was been chosen to do the honours as King Momo.

The Goan fishermen had a float and they performed a traditional dance, 'Kalyan sangali,...sonachi,... song was very nice

Smart kids had a ball on the road and great dancers and all enjoyed it,...

The guy had a tough time walking with the coustume,.....

By the time the floats was nearing its end,... the dancers had to slow down. But still they did a good job entertaining

Party Time @ Goa Carnival
The Carnival of Goa is the time to indulge in feasting, drinking and merry making.

The carnival is also getting the Goa festive mood to higher limits. The media says and other sources say, Goa is not just an epicentre, where drugs are sold at rave and trance parties. In recent years, it has become a transit point for drugs shipped out to various European countries and a production centre for synthetic party drugs.

My opinion : The govt can do more to stop drinking on the streets during carnival, in a way the forgein tourists are making themselves prone to danger - which can be avoided

Again, the Govt is not going to do anything great as they recieve around 2 million tourist annually and that genarates revenue to the state,....

The Basilica of Bom Jesus or Basilica of Good Jesus (Portuguese: Basílica do Bom Jesus) is located in Goa, India is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basilica holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is located in Old Goa, which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rule, about 10 km from the new city of Panjim.

Construction work on the church began in 1594 and was consecrated in May of 1605 by Archbishop, Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes. It contains the body of St. Francis Xavier; a very close friend of St. Ignatius Loyola with whom he founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Francis Xavier died on the Sancian island while enroute to Continental China (December 2, 1552).

The body of Francis Xavier was first taken to Malacca and two years later shipped back to Goa. It is said that the saint's body was as fresh as the day it was buried. The remains of the saint still attract a huge number of devotees (Christian and non-Christian alike) from all over the world, especially during the public viewing of his body every ten years (last held in 2004). The saint is said to have miraculous powers of healing, and pilgrims come from all over the country.

On the banks of Saidapet Cooum (Adyar River),Chennai. We have a colony of families living. Every year, we can see this place flood with rain water, when the rains are happy showering more water to the city.

But what ever happens they are bound to stay here as the vote bank for all ruling political parties.Living along storm water drains and the Cooum, slum dwellers in Saidapet covet the security of permanent shelters. They are not strangers to fake smiles and false poll promises, but a fresh election is another hope for a steady roof over their heads. The politicians know that well.

Following are some of the faces of Saidapet;

There are manny social work people who spend there time here in the slums to bring some joy in there faces, but in this world - it is the survival of the fittest. Many social orgs work with the govt or spend there money to have the slum rebuilt, raising its plinth level, and improving flood-prevention facilities. This is one of the place in Chennai which is prone to fire accident. Many of the NGO's work for the welfare of the children growing here.

Periyapalayam Temple

The Bhavani amman temple is possibly the most popular one in this region and a section of the people come here every year during the Adi/Avani Tamil month. They offer prayers in different forms like head shaving, going with just neem leaves around, lifting the pot with fire, Angapradhakshana, coconut rolling etc.,.

People come in lorries, tractors, vans and carts with full equipments including gas cylinders for cooking, stay here and do their rituals.

It will take about 2 hours for the dharshan in the 25 Rs special entrance itself (during important days) but we went in by 100 Rs ticket & the dharshan of the beautiful Bhavani amman was un forgetable.
Presently, they are building a huge mandapam around the temple and the temple authorities are spending a lot of money. The authorities could have done a lot more to make the environment better for the devotees for the huge fund they might be receiving. The place is largely un-clean, Not even a good car parking was available but the temple authorities have tendered it out and they collect money for the same (Rs 10 per car). Also, the head shaving location maintained by the temple authorities was very much in bad shape, hence I would suggest you carry your blade, if possible water to take bath (incase of small kids, we took our water for my sisters son). See that you hire the right person, they charge about 30 Rs per head shaving + govt coupon should be taken.

We do have options to do small time shopping outside the temple.

Siruvapuri is located about 40 kms from Chennai on Chennai Kolkata highway. The temple is located about 3 kms off the highway. History of the temple has that Lava and Kusa, the sons of Rama lived in this place. Once when Rama was passing this place, they have fought a war with Rama himself without knowing that he was their father. As the young children waged a war here, the place was called as Siruvar-Por-Puri.[Siruvapuri]

Lord Muruga here is believed to grant wishes for those intend to buy or construct a house. Many people who wish to buy a house visit Lord Muruga here for blessings to fulfill their wish. Also, many youngesters who plan to get married visit this place.

Arunagirinathar is seen just near the sanctum facing the Lord. Arunagirinathar has visited this temple and sung many Thiruppugazh songs here. He also has composed an Archanai Thiruppugazh on Lord Muruga

The 1886 original torch is now in the monument's lobby museum.

A new torch replaced the original in 1986, which was deemed beyond repair because of the extensive 1916 modifications. The new torch has gold plating applied to the exterior of the "flame”. A team of French of craftsmen working in New York, recreated Bartholdi’s orginal design for the torch and flame from pre-1916 photographs.

The Statue of Liberty was engineered to withstand heavy winds. Winds of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) cause the Statue to sway 3 inches (76 mm) and the torch to sway 5 inches (130 mm). You will have to climb 156 steps to reach the pedestrial.

Mudumalai national park lies in the northwestern side of Nilgiri hills, in Nilgiri District. Mudumalai wife life reserve is the first sanctuary in southern part of India and mainly it is noted for its Tiger reserve.

Mudumalai Safari :- Van safari is the only safari available now. You will not be able to see a whole of animals in the ride, but it is worth a field trip for your children. Some of the animals which you can see are the spotted deer, monkeys (common among human beings :)-), peacock etc. If your lucky you will see Samba, Elephant, Bison etc.

Ootacamund is a hill station located in Nilgiri hills. Udagamandalam is the offical name for the town. Ooty stands at a height of 7,500 feet above sea level. We reached Metupalayam by train from chennai and took a cab to Ooty to our stay at Holiday Inn.

Train details - Number 2671 from Chennai to Metupalayam & 2672 from Metupalayam to Chennai. On reaching Metupalayam you can take the Nilgiris passenger train operated by Nilgiris Mountain Railway, this train is primarily run to connect towns of Ooty, Coonoor & Kotagiri.

Ooty has a stunning beauty & deep green valley for which the Britishers named it " Queen Of Hills". So how did the Britishers get to this place - Nilgiri hills was the part of Chera Empire in ancient times. Later to fall into Ganga dynasty and then to Hoysala empire by 12 century. After which it became part of Mysore under Tipu Sulthan, who latter surrendered to the British Empire by 18 century. The said part of our history & the present times is poverty, John Sullivan the then governer of Coimbatore provience who liked the climate around the place, started buying land from the local tribe people (Kotas, Toda & Krumba); often buying square kilometres of land in a day for the price of few meals.

Krishnapuram Temple

The Venkatachalapathy temple at Krishnapuram village on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur main road about 12 km from Tirunelveli is one of the few specimens depicting the architectural marvel and grandeur.
It is said that Krishnappa Nayakkar of Nayak dynasty had commissioned some famous sculptors from Vijayanagaram and they have left behind a wonderful collection of sculptures that tell us tales of heroic love and tragedy.

Many rare intricately carved sculptures made of granite stone are fine exhibits of architectural skill.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Venkatachalapathy with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi on either side.

Kodayar dam

Travelling further to the top from Manjolai, we visited the Kodayar dam. Kodayar dam which is located in the hills is noted for its wild view. The two power houses in Kodayar-Hydro Kodayar Power House I and Kodayar Power House II generates over 100 MW.

Kodayar are surrounded by dense forests with valuable trees and wildlife constituting elephants, monkeys, porcupine, snakes, wild boars, deer and many birds. Over 42 species of tropical trees are found here.

Manjolai – Hill Station

Manjolai is 57 km away from Tirunelveli at an elevation of 1162 sq. metre. There are many tea plantations in and around this place. Bombay Burma Tea estate is famous one in this area. About 4000 people are working in these tea plantations.
Manjolai is noteworthy for the climate, scenery and calm atmosphere. On the way to Manjolai from Manimuthar there is a very beautiful place called Dasan Pool (the locals here pronounce this as “Tarzan Pool” :)- ) with plenty of fresh water, greens and fine climate. Though I did not get any chance to visit this pool, have heard very good reviews of the same. I will be posting more pictures on Dasan pool in the future.
We travelled as a group of 16 people from our family and I should appreciate the whole gangs enthusiasm for adventure, having said this I should also mention that the trip is difficult and dangerous ride to be made on a small or big bus.

Lunch for us was arranged at a local hotel, the cook was malayali and the preparation was as well like malayali food – but it was great taste and a treat for the trip we made.We did buy our own fresh water fish before we started our trip and left the same with the hotel – who had the same prepared for our lunch.

The Basilique Sacré-Cœur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart) is a Roman Catholic church and familiar landmark in Paris, located on the highest point of the city in Montmartre.
Lot of musicians play there at the church, for a good sunny day - it is a good experiences.
The site of the 19th-century basilica is traditionally associated with the beheading of the city's patron, Saint Denis, in the 3rd century. According to legend, after he was martyred, Bishop Denis picked up his severed head and carried it several miles to the north where the city of Saint Denis stands today. The hill was later home to a large Benedictine abbey, which was destroyed at the French Revolution.

Elliot's Beach is located in Besant Nagar, Chennai, India. It forms the end-point of the Marina Beach shore. A prominent landmark on this beach is the Karl Schmidt Memorial. The memorial is named after the Dutch sailor who lost his life in the process of saving a drowning swimmer.

Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

By 18th centuary local villagers at Chengalpet complained to the collector of Chengalpet Lionel Palace, about the British soldiers shooting the birds. They demanded and obtained a 'Cowle'(a ban on hunting) from the collector to protect the birds. In 1936 the collector officially recognized the lake as a sanctuary. In 1962 it was given the legal status of reserved forest under the Madras Forest Act.Vedanthangal has the reputation of being one of the oldest water bird sanctuaries in India. Records reveal that this sanctuary has been in existence for more than 200 years. Vedanthangal bird sanctuary is located at about 86 km from Chennai. The sanctuary spans across 72 acres of marshy land.

We reached at about 6.30AM and we thought we should be the only one, but I was wrong - we are the late birds and already the place had a many bird photographers ready with ther arsenal and waiting for the birds to wake up or to get a nice frame.

Like many say if you want to be a nature photographer and shot birds and animals, you need to have atleast 70-400mm lens, else your not going to get any close-up shorts. But a good photographer will say that you can create a good photographer by just having a good picture framed - and it is all the prespective that matters. (Long story short i didnt have one and these pictures where taken with 70-200 & 18-55mm)

Deepavali, or Diwali is a major Indian festival, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Many legends are associated with Diwali. Today it is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe as the "Festival of Lights," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists of Nepal, particularly the Newar Buddhists.

In many parts of India, it is the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest. The people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name, Deepavali. This word, in due course, became Diwali in Hindi. But, in South Indian languages, the word did not undergo any change, and hence the festival is called Deepavali in southern India. Southern India marks it as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.

Diwali is celebrated on the first day of the lunar Kartika month, which comes in the month of October or November.

In Jainism it marks the nirvana of Lord Mahavira, which occurred on October 15, 527 BC. The Sikhs celebrate Diwali for a different reason; on this day, the Sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, was freed from imprisonment along with 52 Hindu Kings (political prisoners) whom he had arranged to be released as well. After his release he went to Darbar Sahib (golden temple) in the holy city of Amritsar. There, he was greeted by Sikhs and many other people. In happiness they lit candles and diyas to greet the Guru.

Mylapore Kabaleshwar temple During Navaratri Festival

Kapaleashwarar temple is a Hindu temple located in Mylapore, Chennai, India. The original 8th century Shiva temple was built by the Pallavas and located on the shore but it was destroyed by the Portuguese and was re-built as a church 300 years later.

During Navarathri, big idols of Poompavai, Sambanthar (Thirugyanasambandar), story is kept in display. Lot of cultural events take place. During summer, a small water tank with a Mandapam in the center is decorated with flowers are kept inside the temple. People buy lot of idols from the near by shops during this festive season.

Adyar Poonga, an eco-park proposed in the Adyar Creek area, is being developed to cover the creek's entire expanse of 358 acres, next to Ambedkar Memorial off Greenways Road, Adyar, Chennai. Work also started on the ecological restoration project at the Adyar Poonga site. Tamil Nadu, which plans to take up ecological restoration of Adyar Estuary in Chennai, formed Adyar Poonga Trust in October 2006. A world-class ecological park (Adyar Poonga) would be established in Adyar Creek area measuring 58 acres in phase-I.

The Ecological Restoration Plan will cover the extent of 358 acres, for which the state has sanctioned Rs 100 crore. After extensive studies and stakeholder consultations, a draft plan is ready. Gingee Fort

Gingee Fort also known as Chinji or Jinji in Tamil Nadu. In India this is one of the few surving forts in Tamil Nadu, the fort consists of three hills. The walls of the fort are a mixture of the naturally hilly terrain comprising the Krishnagiri, Chakkilidrug and Rajagiri hills. After the fort passed into British hands, it did not see any further action. The fort at Gingee was declared a National Monument in 1921 and was under the Archeological Department.

For photography, you can take still pictures and no tripods allowed inside the fort. If you want to use tripods, permission is needed from the ASI, Chennai. Yet to know the procedure but then will update on my blog once I get information.

The idol immersion ceremony went off peacefully at Chennai city and in the suburbs with over 10,000 policemen and officers providing a massive security blanket.

The idols made it to the sea in their clay and paper mache `avatars.' Plaster of Paris idols were present despite a court ban and police checks. So were structures that went beyond the specified height of five feet and those coloured with paints made of banned substances. Two hydraulic cranes methodically lifting the idols and transferring them to the fishermen-turned Friends of Police volunteers.

The Agasthiyamalai range of the western ghats as seen from the rainshadow region of Tirunelveli, India. The southwest monsoon brings rain up to the ghats in Kerala while the other side in Tamil Nadu remains dry. The city is considered to be one of the oldest in the Indian subcontinent, with a history that dates back to 1000 BC. The city is located on the west bank of the perennial river, Thamirabarani.

Ambasamudram - A small town (a.k.a Ambai) in the foothills of Western Ghats is one of the five taluk headquarters of the district. Ambasamudram serves as the main transit point for Papanasam, Manimuthar, Courtallam and for Sabarimala devotees going through Shengottai. Situated in the banks of the perennial river Tamirabarani, it is one of the most pristine and fertile towns of the district. The town is famous for its Wooden Handicrafts (Kadasal). There is a famous temple named Agasthiyar Kovil and it was named because of some true incidents.

In this situation, the center of interest tends to blend in with the background, thus, the photo struggles to pull-in the viewer to one focal point. Guindy National Park, A 2.82 km² (1 sq mi) Protected area of Tamil Nadu, located in Chennai, South India, is the 8th smallest National Park of India and one of the very few national parks situated inside a city. The park is an extension of the grounds surrounding Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of Tamilnadu, India. It extends deep inside the govornor's estate, enclosing beautiful forests, scrub lands, lakes and streams. Guindy Park was originally a game reserve, then owned by a British citizen named Gilbert Rodericks and transferred to the Tamil Nadu Forest Department in 1958.

It was very hot and we couldnt see any animals there, it seems there are 2 spotted deers dying everyday because of the plastics and other waste materials which the animals eat - thrown out by the people visiting the park and other sources of polutions. "Nature should be saved - give it a thought"

The photograph is of a temple which has a hole for light ray to be falling on the ground. It was built during the Pallava's (the things you learn when you travel!). And if you go to Kanchipuram beware of the heat, temperature touchs 35+*C!

The reason I’ve put it here is because it’s a photograph that has good contrast. The image has light and dark areas right next to each other, all over the photograph.

The temple is built of red sandstone and has innumerable carvings of Pallva art, of which the Urdhva Thandava dance of Siva and the laughing face of Parvathi are worth seeing. My best tip is to keep taking photos, keep thinking about it, keep experimenting - there's really no substitute for practice. In my experience, it's best to work intuitively, really focussing on 'being' with your subject, bringing your own feelings to it, and taking photographs from there; a good photo should say as much about you as your subject. Try not to have preconceptions, or 'rules' in your head; be open to seeing what's there as directly as you can. Having said all that, it helps if you have some interesting weather on your side; if you are able to, pick and choose when to go out; get up early and see if you can catch some mist, or choose a thundery day, or sunshine and showers; try different times of day to see what different sun directions bring.

I watched this lily from my window daily and was waiting for the right time to photograph it. It is a natural light shot with a bit of fill at the front, which was used to darken the background.
The question that I’ve been asked a few times this week is: "should I shoot in black and white mode or convert my colored shots later into black and white on my computer?"
My approach to this has always been to shoot in full color and to edit later if necessary.

Shore Temple

The Shore Temple (700-728 CE) is so named because it over looks the Bay of Bengal. It is a structural temple, built with blocks of granite, dating from the 8th century AD. It was build on a promontory sticking out into the Bay of Bengal at Mamallapuram, a tiny village south of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The village was a busy port during the 7th and 8th century reign of the Pallava dynasty during the reign of Narasimhavarman II. The site is famous for the rock-cut caves and the sculptured rock that line a granite hill, including one depicting Arjuna's Penance as well as for other temples in the area. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the oldest structural (versus rock-cut) stone temples of South India.

As the light fades, do thoughts of photography wane also?For me, when I’m absolutely desperate for light without a flash, I use this technique:
1. Crank ISO as high as it will go
2. Shoot RAW if possible
3. Use aperature-priority with the lowest f-stop on the fastest lens I have (f1.8 or lower if you can).
4. If that still causes my shutter speeds to be too low to hand-hold, then I might even set exposure compoensation down a stop, which will increase the speed a little, and then I’ll push the exposure in post (preferablly in RAW).
5. Lastly, I’ll use various forms of noise reduction to help on the grain/noise front.

The exact time of temple's origin is not confirmed but the structures that are standing today date mostly from the 12th to the 18th century. The present temple standing today was built in the 17th century A.D. by th Nayak rulers. This also has long walk ways with lots of shopping to be done,...what you see here is a late evening normal shopping atmosphere.

Take time to smell the flowers! Infact that is my mantra... I focussed on the simple flower to show the natures beauty. One thing what I did was to imporve the color saturation on a overcast day and positioned myself as close as possible with flower.

The picture will be more interesting if the horizon or your point of interest is not in the center of the picture. Put the horizon a third of the way down from the top of the frame or the mountain peak a third of the way in from the left. Experiment until you find a composition that appeals to you.
